Theodor Mommsen (1817 - 1903) received the Nobel Prize for Literature as the first German in 1902 for his extensive and still fundamental publications on Roman history and Roman constitutional law. Mommsen, who was a professor of law and a historian, came from the little village of Garding, which is located on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. A memorial with a small exhibition on the life and works of the scholar was established next to his birth house in 1987.
