The „Völkerkundesammlung“ (ethnology collection) is part of the „Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte“ (museum of art and cultural history). Since 1984 it is housed in the “Zeughaus” (armoury), which was built in 1594, next to the “Dom” (cathedral). Changing exhibitions show the history and the present life of foreign people, mostly from outside Europe. Objects of art and cult as well as items of everyday use from the Near and Middle East, East Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the South Seas constitute the focal points of the collection fund. The exhibits were partly gathered on expeditions; partly they originate from donations by citizens of the Hanseatic town. Thereby the collection also reflects the varied relations of the trading town to the rest of the world in the past two centuries. A remarkable piece is the “Lübecker Apothekenmumie” (Lübeck pharmacist’s mummy) as there is no Old Egyptian mummy with a comparably rich amulet adornment, which is still in situ on the mummified body, in any other European museum.
