In association with nature conservation, youth work and tourism the ‘Naturzentrum Nordfriesland’ (Nordfriesland Nature Centre) developed in 1976 as an information and activity centre on natural history. It instructs about the most important North Frisian land forms in 13 exhibition rooms with four big showcases: geest, woods, heath, bog, inshore waters, mud flats and the ‘Halligen’ (small islands in the North Sea off Schleswig-Holstein). The centre offers slide shows, nature handicraft workshops, amber cutting, guided tours and walks through heath and woods, around bird reserves, through mud flats and across to the ‘Halligen’. There are special programmes for school classes and groups. The nature centre is an officially recognized national park information centre. Annually changing special exhibitions on natural history are shown, especially in the period from May to October.
