The museum is dedicated to the archaeology and history of the significant settlement site Haithabu (Hedeby) from the Viking age. Reconstructions and models show the settlement, its buildings and fortifications. Findings on the topics of housework and living, food, clothing and jewellery convey some impression of daily life at that time. Pagan and Christian religion, burial customs, rune stones and writing are further topics. Trade and commerce as well as the urban development of Haithabu and Schleswig form main issues of the presentation. In the ship hall a longboat is rebuilt in front of the visitors’ eyes.
