“Vogelkojen” (large bird traps with an artificial pond) were used to catch wild ducks in the past. The Danish king permitted the construction of the “Vogelkoje” in Kampen in 1767. It was modelled on Dutch examples. Until 1921 about 25.000 ducks were caught here annually. In 1935 the complete site was legally protected. Old plans and foundation remnants made it possible to build an almost exact reconstruction of the buildings. Inside one of the buildings a nature and cultural historical exhibition provides more information for visitors, who can become acquainted with the function of the large trap on a 700 m footpath combined with an educational trail.
