The Eckernförde Museum is located in the heart of the town, on the Rathausmarkt. It is located in the historic town hall from the 15th century, the centrepiece of which is a large citizens' hall. This used to be used for court hearings and weddings, among other things - and you can still have a civil wedding here today.
In the citizens' hall and the neighbouring parts of the building, furniture, paintings and art and cultural history objects tell of Eckernförde's residential culture, guilds, trade and commerce. The result is a vivid picture of the town and the people who lived and worked here. Particularly noteworthy are exhibits from the heyday of Eckernförde faience in the 18th century. In addition, a historic kitchen, numerous objects relating to laundry and an original grocer's shop show how our lives have changed over the last 100 years.
The town is characterised by its unique location by the sea. Eckernförde owes its economic prosperity to the fish processing industry with the famous ‘Kiel sprats’. Exhibits from the fishing and fish smoking industries show that living and working by the sea has shaped everyday life and the townscape. And an event that brought Eckernförde into the history books also has to do with the Baltic Sea: the Battle of Eckernförde. On 5 April 1849, Schleswig-Holstein shore batteries successfully fought against Danish warships. The event created a media spectacle, which is documented in the museum with paintings, graphics and numerous artefacts and memorabilia.
