Description
The Lübeck art collection of the 19th and 20th century is located in two adjacent palatial merchants’ houses of the 18th century. The “Behnhaus” has the largest and most impressive hall in Lübeck and classicist wing rooms. It is regarded as the most beautiful merchant’s house in Northern Germany. The Drägerhaus presents the only preserved sequence of festivity rooms of the 18th century in Lübeck. Works by Johann Friedrich Overbeck and Gotthardt Kuehl constitute the foci of the collection of paintings. In addition, romantic paintings are presented, e.g by Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Blechen and Carl Gustav Carus. Works by Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt, Lovis Corinth and Edvard Munch are also shown. The Classical Modern collection includes works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein and Ernst Beckmann. Contemporary art is represented by e.g. Schumacher, Dahmen, Neumann, Knaupp, Armando and Hoehme. Added are examples of realistic sculptures of the 20th century. In addition to the collection on fine arts, the museum shows home décors of the time around 1800 and the Biedermeier period (1815-1848). Arts and crafts of the 19th and 20th century are also exhibited. The Art Noveau section is worth seeing.
