Description
Bag grabbers for coarse and finer fabric, rubber bales, coffee bags... In the authentic setting of a warehouse from 1888, typical implements and goods which illustrate the day-to-day work of a warehouse keeper are shown: It involved weighing and inspecting the goods as well as their processing with the help of sorting-machines or by handpicking. Another important topic is the tea and coffee trade which was based in the warehouse district, once. In addition, numerous historical photographs and plans give an insight in the building history of the warehouse district. Last but not least, the almost lost trade of the lighterman is recollected. He transported goods by barge from the freighters to the quays and warehouses.
Further topics are: coffee- and tea-trading as well as lighter-boating (supplying the warehouses with goods by transport on (cargo) barges).
The engaging and interactive exhibition emphasises the skills and ingenuity of the work of warehousemen.
Parking
During the week, parking in the Speicherstadt is very limited, so we recommend the Contipark Speicherstadt multi-storey car park (approx. 5 minutes' walk to the museum). Coaches can stop in front of the museum at short notice to get on and off.
