Im Mittelpunkt dieses Gemäldes, welches aufgrund des Motivs den Industriebildern zuzurechnen ist, steht der Schiffbau. Ein großer, leuchtend roter Schiffsrumpf, eingerüstet von hölzernen Hellingen, dominiert das Bild. Der darstellung der Arbeiter wird kaum Bedeutung zugemessen, sie erscheinen am Fuße des gewaltigen Schiffsrumpfes, der somit im Vergleich mit den Menschen noch imposanter wirkt.
