Das Motiv zeigt das Innere der Kajüte, Gepäck und Kisten stehen auf dem Boden, Passagiere sitzen oder liegen sichtlich unbequem auf Bänken oder Kisten. Der Stich bezieht sich auf die 1819 eingerichtete regelmäßige Fähr- und Postverbindung zwischen Kiel und Kopenhagen, die zunächst durch das Dampfschiff "Caledonia" bedient wurde.
